Music Instruction

Dr. Reese offers individual instrumental lessons on various instruments, as well as individual and class instruction in music theory, composition, orchestration, music history, conducting, jazz improvisation and music technology.

We offer a traditional cost-free trial lesson (Probestunde) for the initial meeting, during which we make a plan for further study, including enrolment, scheduling and recommendations for instruments, instructional materials, music, and other related topics.

Families have two options for individual study with Dr Reese: through the Kreismusikschule Kaiserslautern or on a private instructional basis.

 Kreismusikschule

The Kreismusikschule are the state-supported music schools for each region.  Dr. Reese is currently a member of the faculty at the Kreismusikschule Kaiserslautern. The KMS deals with the billing, and they work on a tuition basis, with a monthly charge for weekly lessons. Payments are spread throughout the year, including school holidays when no lessons take place, but as the school is state-supported, the price per lesson is still much lower than private individual lessons, which makes it the most economical option for many families.

30 Minute Weekly Individual Lesson:          €48 per month

45 Minute Weekly Individual Lesson:          €72 per month

Complete KMS policies and tuition rates are available at their website (in German) here

Private Instruction

Private individual instruction is also available; with this option, families pay Dr. Reese directly for each actual lesson.  As these lessons are not state-supported, rates per lesson are necessarily higher, but this can be a viable option for families in situations where a long-term commitment to weekly lessons is not possible.

30 Minute Weekly Individual Lesson:          €25 per lesson

45 Minute Weekly Individual Lesson:          €35 per lesson

For both options, there is a 30% discount for multiple members of same family scheduling lessons on the same day.

Available instruments:

Beginning to advanced oboe, saxophone, violin, piano, organ, harpsichord

Beginning flute. clarinet, trumpet, French horn

Individual Academic Lessons:

Music Theory, History, Composition/Arranging, Orchestration, Conducting, Jazz Improvisation.

Same rates as above.

Cancellation Policy:

For both KMS and private students, students are expected to attend weekly lessons as scheduled, except on German holidays and during Rheinland-Pfalz school breaks; these can be found here. If a student is ill or otherwise unable to attend a lesson, please contact Dr. Reese at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled lesson time.  If a student has an unexpected illness or injury on the day of the lesson, please let Dr. Reese know as soon as possible.  No-shows and unexcused cancellations within 24 hours may be billed to families at the normal lesson rate.  This is particularly a concern at remote teaching locations, where we must pay for use of those facilities.

If Dr. Reese must cancel a lesson, families of private students will not be billed.  For KMS students, if Dr. Reese must cancel a lesson, we will do our best to reschedule a makeup lesson at a later time.

Instruments and Accessories

While families are generally expected to provide their own instruments for students, we can provide assistance to families in finding instruments for students to use.  The KMS does have some instruments available for KMS-registered students to use for a nominal monthly rental fee.  If the KMS or studio does not immediately have an instrument available, we can provide recommendations for reputable instrument makers, music stores and distributors. We can also help families evaluate used instruments, and in some cases help restore them for use.  We are also pleased to provide recommendations for instrument-specific accessories such as reeds, strings, mouthpieces, etc.

For lessons, we recommend that students use some kind of portfolio to protect their printed music, and that they bring some kind of notebook in which to record lesson assignments, provide feedback, and track progress.

At home, families should have a quality music stand, a metronome, and a pencil (with eraser) immediately accessible in the students' daily practice area.

Printed Music

It is important that students begin to build up their own library of music, complete with their own markings and lessons learned through the course of study.  This library can become a treasured resource in future years!  Dr. Reese has a large library of printed music, but we do not generally lend out originals of sheet music to students.  If the pieces we use are available in the public domain, we may sometimes provide copies or electronic PDFs to students.  If the pieces are still in copyright, however, we cannot legally provide copies, but we will provide recommendations for sources to find the editions we recommend.

Transportation and Parking

Families are responsible for getting students to their lessons at the agreed upon locations at their scheduled times. For our primary studio in Thaleischweiler, parking is usually available on Erlenstraße and in the cul-du-sac adjacent to the Musikstudio. If no parking is available when you arrive for a lesson, please contact Dr. Reese and we will assist in finding you a place.

FAQs

How do I sign up for lessons?

The first step is to contact us, so we can schedule a free trial lesson for you. At the trial lesson, we will discuss further options for scheduling, and how to register either with the Kreismusikschule Kaiserslautern or on a private instructional basis.

Do you offer any performance opportunities for students? Concerts or Recitals?

Yes! We hold periodic studio recitals at our Thaleischweiler studio, and participate in Kreismusikschule events as well. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the annual national youth music competition, Jugend Musiziert, which is held each Winter. And Dr. Reese also directs a bilingual youth orchestra for area students!

Can you fix my instrument?

This depends on the instrument, and what’s going on with it. Contact us for an evaluation. Our studio has a small instrument repair and restoration shop that can address many common problems. If the problem is bigger than we can fix, we’ll explain what is wrong, and provide recommendations regarding what to do next, including referring you to a specialist’s workshop if necessary.

I have to miss a lesson. What do I do?

Contact Dr. Reese as soon as you know you will miss a lesson. Email is best, but if this is not possible, a phone call or message will also work. Private lessons cancelled with less than 24 hrs notice may be billed as per studio policy.

What happens during school holidays?

We generally follow the Rheinland-Pfalz school calendar. Holidays and school breaks can be found here.

I have a bit of a cold today. Should I come to my lesson?

Everyone feels a little under the weather sometimes. In these cases, for the sake of the health of everyone involved, we ask that students do not attend their lesson for that week, but please let us know as soon as possible. We will make every effort to reschedule a makeup lesson when students feel better.
