Nimrod

Here is a bit of Elgar on the organ, as a musical tribute for my parents’ 70th wedding anniversary.

The Enigma Variations is a series of connected symphonic vignettes written by Sir Edward Elgar on a enigmatic theme; each movement was written as a tribute to one of his friends or acquaintances. The 9th variation, titled “Nimrod,” honored August Jäger, a very close personal and professional friend of Elgar.

There are so many emotions contained in this gorgeous little piece; certainly love, but also courage, dignity, a little pain, and above all, a deep and abiding respect. A fitting tribute for a couple who have weathered many storms through their 67 years together, known much joy and sorrow, and have been a wonderful blessing and an example for so many.

(This video is best listened to with headphones or stereo speakers, due to the dynamic and tonal range of this piece.)

“Nimrod” from the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, arranged for organ solo.
